What Does it Mean to Dream of Death?

Death Dreams don't necessarily foretell darkness.

A lot of people have the mistaken idea that dreaming of death foretells of a loved one dying.

First of all, dreams are a many things, but psychic they are not.  Our dreams reflect what is going on inside our minds and hearts.   They deal with (and sort out) things that we are currently experiencing or things that we have currently experienced.

Now having said that, we can take the information and symbolism found in our dreams to help us in the future.  So, in that regard, they can provide warnings and admonitions.  However, please don’t ever think they foretell bad omens or that dreaming of darkness is a prediction for upcoming  darkness.

If you have had a dream which involved death, rest assured that you are far from alone.  We’ve all had death dreams and, while troubling, we all know that they slink out of our lives just as fast as they slunk in.

Death dreams generally mean that you are anxious or worried.  You may not fully realize how much anxiety you’re actually feeling.  Many times, troubling dreams like this wave a flag for the individual and cause them to realize just how much stress they’ve been under.  The dreamer can then realize that they need to pull back a little bit – enjoy life more rather than just anxiously trying to get from point A to point B!

Almost all dreams of dying can be traced back to an overworked, overly anxious individual very much in need of some time off!

im 12. my grandma has cancer. adn i have been dreaming bad things about her being hurt or dieing. which rly worries me. and i actually cry in my sleep!

  3. olivia o'neill says:

i had a dream last night that a random 12 year old boy was dead on the floor but i managed to getting breathing again but he then died again, but today my moms boyfriends dog died he was 12 to and dave managed to get him breathing again and he died on dave to. does my dream have anything to do with the dog? i don’t understand.

  4. admin says:

Olivia, More likely than not, the dog’s age and/or health was somewhere in the back of your subconscious mind and caused the dream in the first place. Someone (maybe even yourself) could have been talking about the dog’s age and wondering how long he might or might not live. This could have led to the dream – then again, the dream could have simply represented a conflict in your own life.

Either way, the dog’s death was just a tragic coincidence and I fell badly for all involved. Everyone’s in my thoughts – losing a pet is horrible.

  5. admin says:

Morgan, You sound like a real sweetheart! I’m so horribly sorry that your grandma has cancer, I’ll certainly remember her in my thoughts and prayers.

Illnesses are hard to get our mind’s wrapped around, aren’t they? We wonder, “Why her…. why MY grandma?” Then we wonder what might happen to her. All of these worries and thoughts are too much for our “daytime” brain to handle, so it tries to make sense of it while we are asleep – in our dreams.

I want to tell you that more and more people are living with cancer now than ever before! My own aunt survived breast cancer and is as feisty and fun as ever!

Try really hard not to think about your grandma’s illness right before bedtime. Say a sweet prayer for her and then put your mind somewhere else… even if it’s school or homework! The trick is to MAKE your thoughts concentrate on something else before falling asleep. Carry these thoughts into your sleep with you.

Also, try to see your grandma as the same person she was before her illness. She’s still the same wonderful person and, no doubt, loves you very much. Think of her as your grandmother rather than your grandmother who has cancer. Try VERY hard to see her as your grandma, not your sick grandma.

You’re in my thoughts and prayers and so is your grandma. Take care and I hope your dreams are much sweeter very, very soon.

  8. admin says:

esmeralda, I’d say that you have probably either directly or indirectly dealt with a loss of some sort recently. Either you (or possibly someone you know) has lost something or someone close to them. It’s hard to get your mind around a loss and the mind tries to make sense of things while we’re asleep.

Keep in mind that these dreams mean NOTHING AT ALL about you or your daily life. They aren’t a sign of bad luck or anything like that. Dreams can’t tell the future – more than anything else, they just try to make sense of what has already happened. I hope your dreams are much happier very soon!

  10. Delandra says:

Hello my name is Delandra and I am 25 Years old I recently lost my mother and I am now beginning to have dreams of her dieing again .Some of the things in my dream are kinda weird. There is one dream that I had where I was fussing wit my uncle about something and he follows me into the house and I end up underneath him and he place a gun in my chest and begins to pull the trigger but while i’m screaming for help the bullets are just blanks and then i’m where someone gets a phone call from my grandmother telling them that my mother is dead and i begin to scream and cry and I wake u wit tears in my eyes asif i am crying but i really was crying. Can u explain this to me please

  11. admin says:

Caroline, Here’s what the heck to think about it! – You probably are a very loving girl who has a soft spot for animals. In fact, you’re probably like a lot of young actresses (Megan Fox for example) who are known for loving animals and being very sweet and kind to them.

A lot of times, when we’ve done something we don’t feel 100 percent wonderful about (like a little white lie, not doing as well on a test as we wanted to, arguing with a friend, smarting off to a parent…. that sort of thing) – down deep inside we’ll feel bad about it. The guilt will manifest itself in our dreams often. Once you do whatever you can to make it right, so to speak, the dreams will go away.

As a huge cat lover (I even have a cat blog!), I hope you give your wee cat extra love and attention!

  12. Joi says:

Delandra, I am SO sorry about your mother. Losing your mother’s one of the worst loses any of us ever face – and it’s the first pain we ever have that she isn’t there to help heal. I believe your dream can help many others – so I used it as a post with an analysis/interpretation with it. You can find the post HERE. Thank you for your dream and may your dreams be much, much sweeter right away. – Joi

  13. Ashley says:

    Hi….

Recently i dreamt my older sister (29) I passed away- i think it was from a car accident, I remember her dissapearing and hearing from my father that he hadnt heard from her and was worried. I didnt see her actually die, or at all in the dream, but the majority of what i remember was just grieving with my little sister (19) as well as my mother father and brother(23) I cried in my sleep, and it was quite embarrassing because i was sleeping away that weekend from home In DC. I live in Ct, about ten min from her and see her about everyday, we are best friends you could say. I have always had fears about death, and no longer having those people in my life anymore that i love, but this is the first dream like this i have had. I woke up and was depressed for a couple days after…. i was just really reallly sad in the dream, and when i woke up. I wanted to know why i dreamt this? thanks for any info.

my name is crissy i am 18 yrs old i have recently been having dreams of accidents happening to me the first one was i was repeated hit by a train. walkin down the sidewalk, driving down the road, in my house everywhere. out of no where the train would pop out and blow its horn and hit me. then my next dream was an explosion, it happened twice in my dream. big explosions. my skin was peeling off i could feel the wind and heat pushing on me and there were alot of military men. ive never experienced that in real life. then the next day i went to see the movie the crazies and at the end there was an explosion and there were miltary men through out the movie. and last nite i had a dream i was under water and i kept swimming to the top but the more i swam the further away the surface was, i never made it to the surface resulting in drowning. why do i keep having these dreams of dying? i read your article on death dreams and im not stressed in my daily life so i dont understand?

  17. monie says:

Well i need to know to because i had this dream that i was at home with my mom, little brother, causin, and 1 of my moms best friend. All of a sudden something happened to me(i dont what because i forgot)and i died.I was slowly disappearing and my mom saw that.I got this report card from god but i didnt see god,it said something about life! Then i was slowly fading away and my mom could tell that it was my time to go,so she gave me this spiritual necklace it was colorful though!!!I told her that i loved her and she said she loved me too and i started crying. Then i faded and she couldnt see me anymore and thats when i started jumping on the chair and my mom noticed it and so did her friend. Her friend got a little scared but my momtold her that it was ok because it was really me…Then thats when this lady in the bus came over and she said come on you dont want to be late for your first step to haven! And thats whe n i got the feeling that she was dead too and shes goes to everyone and picks them up.So i wnet with her and i got on the bus, after that i was in a place with steps and places and i saw every one that was dead(mostly kids)and they all looked normal.I also bumped into some of my friends and i asked if they were dead and they said yea and i said wow, they asked me how i died and i told them!THEN i saw my other friends and i gotta go ill tell you later!

  18. trish says:

i had a nightmare bout my mother hung herself wat does that
mean is it gonna be true?

  19. Joi says:

Trish, It absolutely doesn’t mean that it’ll come true! Dreams can’t affect daily life all by themselves. They are the result of things that have already happened. Your mom’s safe!

The dream probably indicated that your mom had done or said something that you think she shouldn’t have done or said. It was probably a situation where you felt badly for your mom and thought she had harmed herself in some way.

  20. Joi says:

    Crissy,
Dreams like this are often times your mind’s way of “acting out” negativity and negative thoughts and vibes. They would indicate that there is something in your life that you feel negative about. It could be the weather (I think we’re all anxious for it to get warm and stay warm!), school, work, a family situation, or even your hair. Basically, anything that you have felt negative about for a while can lead to outrageous dreams like this.

The problem is that these sorts of dreams only add to the negativity – they sort of feed on themselves and keep causing more dreams just like them. The more we think about troubling dreams, the more apt they are to keep showing up in one way or another.

I realize that it’s almost impossible NOT to think about these kinds of dreams but you really have to give it your all. Take your mind as far away from the dreams as possible!

  24. Ashleigh says:

I have a 3 different dreams within a week of my mom, dad, and sister dying. Each in a different dream. The first one was about me and my sister. We were running down this road when a man came out of nowhere and started chasing us, when we were running we ran through a passage and she wasnt behind me anymore then i found her dead on the road. The next was about my mom. I came into her room and she was wearing an elegant green long dress lying on her bed, i went to say something to her but she was cold and was not moving so she was dead. The next was about my dad. I cam home one day after school and my mom and sister acted like nothing happened and they said that my dad had died in an accident but that everything was going to be okay. Please help me understand what these dreams mean.

  34. Lizzie says:

For a few weeks now I have been dreaming about death. People keep telling me that I’m stressed or what not but I don’t really do anything that would stress me out.
First dream: I had to take a tape to my boyfriend. As I looked down the road, I noticed all the seniors from last year were back at the school all in a black uniform. Being one of those seniors I put on my uniform and made my way down to the school. One of the students had died. Someone I didn’t really talk to often. I asked how and no body knew. Moments later my boyfriend arrives and starts yelling at me because I didn’t get the tape to him. I lost my nut and just yelled at him telling him to get the hell out of my life. – End Dream woke up in tears

The second dream: I was near a peer. I hate water but my family and I were on a boat. But it wasn’t moving it just stayed at it’s dock. I don’t smoke, but for some reason in this dream I did… a lot. So I would get on a bike and cycle down this really long peer. The bike handles would dissapear making me fall to the floor painfully. Looking up I witnessed a stranger drown. -End Dream woke up craving a cigarette.

The third dream: Usually once I wake up and go back to sleep I have a different dream. But when I went back to sleep this dream continued. I was at the hospital, someone in my family was having a baby. There was a flood outside where I had been standing with my family so we were forced to get inside the hospital. My mother and I went into this strange delivery ward which were actually tiny pink cubicals with women and their babies lying in a small bed. We sat in an empty one which had our surname on it. A woman rushed in telling us that our family member had the baby. My mother and I got up and just left the room, never letting me see the baby. This is when I woke up and went back to sleep. I walked out of the hospital and into a near by house. I saw a few of my friends in a room crying and panicking that there were people outside that were trying to kill them. I looked outside and no one was there. My friends left the room and all I heard were screams. People outside were randomly dropping to the floor. They were all dying. I locked myself in the room and began to panic. An old man covered in blood crawled into my room. I snapped his neck and stood there stairing. Moments later a baby crawled in. He was so beautiful. He smiled at me and I began to cry not knowing why. His face just brought me to tears. End Dream I woke up crying this time I didn’t stop for a good fifteen minutes.

    They’re freaking me out.

  47. Keziah says:

    I am 15,
I have had this dream for weeks now and one part of it is always the same. The rest is different. And in that part, there is a baby. She is a brown baby. Very cute. Then a man comes towards her with a gun. He stops at the babies head and points the gun at her head. I then block my ears and close my eyes. After the shot (that actually sounded like a pop) their is people around me, crying. It stops there. What does it mean?!

  48. Mark says:

Hi My name is Mark. I’m 11 going onto 12 and I’ve been dreaming about death for quite a while. Mostly its about me being killed or commiting suicide. I have no idea why but it just shows Jesus looking down sad.(by guessing its pass armageddon) I still cry out of anger and the school psychologist and teacher thought I’m going mad because I was expressing my feelings in a notebook. I feel that they want me to tell them but I am uncomfortable with that. Its not like I’m going to get up and yell at the people who I dislike and get annoyed by.(especially since the school is a type of school where kids from Artesia go to and are wannabe ghetto people and involves a lot of cussing and I put in the notebook “f word” so and so) I want to know why I’m so mad all the time(Harry Potter?)
and dream these things about people in my family and life dying and me dying. Praise God that I haven’t tried killing myself. I bet the whole district thinks I’m crazy. Look I’m misunderstanded and people take it the wrong way. My sadness hasn’t been this much since my grandpa disowned me and the rest of my dad’s family. I also fear the death of my grandmother who I love very much. Earlier I was crying because I just got an image of Jesus sad….I just hope He expells the darkness in my heart. I just feel like hurting or destroying something when I’m pushed to that point. Please help me because I feel like the district is going against me. – Mark H. Ross MS(Formerly Benito Juarez ES) ABCUSD

  49. Joi says:

Mark, Death dreams and dreaming of dying are more about transition (or changes) that the dreamer is going through in their life. For someone really young – it’s pretty understandable. Young people go through so many changes! Death dreams are kind of your mind’s way of dealing with change and changes.

If something at school or at home changes at all, your mind has to “wrap itself” around the change – kind of process all of the information like a computer process information we type into it, you know? If we give the computer too much information at a time – it might blow its stack!

If we go through a lot of stuff, our mind feels like blowing its stack. Sometimes it does so by presenting us with crazy dreams.

And, guess what, sometimes the changes going on aren’t even BAD changes. Sometimes they’re good. But we still have to deal with and cope with them. Hello, crazy dreams!

Some things that go on in a young person’s life that affects their dreams are:

    1. A baby brother or sister being born.
    2. Parents divorcing, arguing, re-marrying, etc.
    3. A family move.
    4. A friend moving away.
    5. A friend “changing” or acting differently.
    6. A new teacher or a new school.
    7. Changes in themselves or their bodies.
    8. Changes in a favorite team.

Sometimes even summer vacation can trigger crazy dreams and dreams about death – after all, it’s a change.

When things get quieted down and the “change” becomes more the “norm,” I’m sure your dreams will go back to normal. If you need someone to talk to, please see a relative, friend, or teacher you can trust. If the dreams continue, please let me know – either here in the comments or e-mail me.

Best of luck and I hope your dreams and everything else clears up soon. Very often, the craziest things in life actually make us stronger people…. it’s like they give us superhero strength! I’m wishing this for you in the worst way. :)

  50. Mark says:

well my parents argue or my mom misunderstands or my mind just gets a image that makes me mad or sad or something that involves zombies
