First of all, what do we mean by inadequacy dreams?  An inadequacy dream would be one in which you dream that you are either:

• too fat
• too thin
• too old
• too young
• too unattractive
• too sick
• too forgetful
• not smart enough
• not tall enough
• too tall
• overqualified
• under qualified
  
• and on and on and on!

Basically, any dream in which you disappoint yourself, scare yourself, or fail to meet your expectations is an inadequacy dream.

Here’s a recent inadequacy dream submitted for analysis: Dreaming About Forgetting

I am a 52 year old mother of 2 boys (one’s 12 and the other is 21).  I had a dream a week ago that has stayed with me and is just very upsetting.  I dreamed that I was holding a baby girl and that she was my baby.  She was crying and had a fever.  So I took her to what appeared to be a doctor’s office.  The nurse working at the window asked me my name and I told her.  She asked what was wrong with my baby and I told her that she had a fever, didn’t seem to feel well and was crying a lot.  Then the nurse asked me my baby’s name and I couldn’t remember it.

I felt SO frustrated and scared in the dream (and when I woke up and ever since).  I was trying so hard to remember the name and kept thinking, “How can you forget the name of your own baby?”

Most of the time dreams don’t stay with me.  I usually remember them for a day or two but this one won’t leave my mind.  I keep feeling how frustrated and scared I was.

Now I’m scared that this means I’m losing my memory or that I might have problems with Alzheimers or something.  I’m just really in a bad place right now because of this dream.  Please help me sort this out so I can get rid of this feeling.  Thank you.

P.S.  Oh, by the way, this is strange – but somehow I know that the baby’s name was Victoria. It came to me just as I was waking up from the dream.

First of all, relax and throw out any left over fears and anxieties!   Very often dreaming about forgetting things is simply a sign that we need to slow down and start paying more attention to things.   It’s possible that you recently forgot something or almost forgot something and the frustration of that incident carried over into your dream.

Forgetting things is a very common thing – it happens to people of all ages, young and old.  It isn’t a sign of losing your memory or even of getting old – most of the time it’s simply a sign that you’re too busy or that you aren’t paying as much attention to details as possible.  Sometimes, in our work and at home, we get kind of lazy and don’t pay as much attention to details.  This leads to forgotten cellphones, keys, and sunglasses!

Most people just laugh at the situation – but a certain age group (between about 35 and 55) almost panics.  We tend to think, “Dear, God, please don’t let me be losing my mind!!!“  We don’t just hit the panic button, we jump on it.

Yet, if we pause and take a deep breath, we’ll remember that forgetting things happen at all ages.  After all, what about the time we forgot our school lunch, the time we forgot the dates for the history exam (!!!), the time we forgot to take the right notebook to class – etc, etc, etc.  If we would be reasonable, we’d realize that forgetting things isn’t anything new!

I do a lot of research and reading for another one of my websites, Out of Bounds.  It’s all about mental fitness, sharpening your mind, improving your memory, and just staying sharp.  I always recommend challenging the mind to keep it on it’s proverbial toes. Doing a lot of the recommended tips given on Out of Bounds will help you to not only stay sharp – it’ll give you confidence.

Right now, I’d say that a recent event (something small – like forgetting your keys…) has sort of smacked your confidence around – hence the dream.  Unfortunately, the dream only compounded the problem!

Rest assured that I’m certain the frustrating feelings will subside right away.

Other Inadequacy Dreams

If you’ve had inadequacy dreams,  realize that they stem from a particular insecurity.  If you dream that you are overweight, for example, you either…

1. Have been feeling like you need to lose weight.
2. Have a deep-seeded fear of becoming overweight.

Another interpretation for this type of dream – if you’re certain that you have no insecurities whatsoever – is that you “emotionally feel” whatever inadequacy is portrayed in the dream.  For example, if you dream you are incredibly ugly – yet don’t feel at all unattractive, you could have recently acted “ugly” and have guilt over your actions.

If you dream that you are overweight – yet you know you are a perfect size – you may feel like you’re “carrying too much weight” at the office, at school, or at home.

The majority of dream interpretation requests I get have to do with 1 of the following types of dreams:

I thought we’d take a good look at one of these dreams today:  Dreams of losing things.  Many people want to know what it means to dream about losing things – some wonder if it’s a sign that they’ll be losing something (or someone) in their life.  First of all let me say a resounding NO, these dreams do not tell the future or imply that you’ll lose anything or anyone in your waking life.

Dreams deal with what’s going on in our lives – or with what has gone on in our lives.  Dreams are where we sort it all out.

When we dream of losing things, its almost always because we are (in our waking life) overwhelmed and are currently being pulled in too many different directions or are trying to do too many things.  These dreams often have to do with us, personally, more than things we lose.  They’re just symbols for the bigger picture.

It’s our brain’s way of telling us:  Too many pots on the stove!  Something’s going to happen if you don’t get it together. Dreaming of losing things often means we are “out of touch” or “out of control” in some area of our life.

Many times, life gets so hectic and twisted that we lose touch with who we actually are.  We try to be so many things to so many people that we sort of lose who we truly are.  We forget the things that truly matter (or at least should matter) in life.  At the risk of wading into the deep end of the pool, dreaming of losing things often reflects that we’ve “lost a part of ourselves.”

If you dream that you have lost something, examine your heart and life the very next day, while the dream is still fresh in your mind.  Have you lost touch with yourself lately?  Are you too busy?  Are parts of your life sort of spinning out of control?

I dreamed about 4 nights ago that my husband and I were fighting so bad that I hit him in the head with a plate. We were yelling and yelling and he was so unreasonable and was saying such mean things that I felt like I had to just shut him up. I am not a violent person and actually don’t even fight with people that much. I argue with my husband sometimes but all marriages have that. But I never hit him with plates. Why would I be so violent in my dream? It is really troubling me. I can’t get the image of the plate and his cut head bleeding so much blood out of my mind. It makes me sick and I don’t know what to do. Is it a bad omen for something happening to one of us or to a big fight. As you can see I am really a wreck over this. Please help me.

First of all, rest assured that there is no omen involved. People often think that, but dreams can’t tell the future. They do, however, often indicate something that is currently going on or something that has gone on. A dream such as this one indicates that there is something “below the surface.” More times than not, if we dream about an open wound (or surgery, pulling teeth… that sort of thing) – our mind is trying to “dig” beneath the surface for something.

In this case, I would be willing to bet that you have been trying to get something across to your husband for a while – something that he either isn’t accepting or simply isn’t “catching.” It could be hints you’ve been dropping for a new sofa, something around the house that you want him to take care of, or something on a grander scale. It could even be a case of wanting him to listen to you or pay more attention to you.

The hit in the head with the plate was pretty much your subconscious mind’s way of saying, “Now I’ve got your attention!!!”

As far as dream symbolisms go, I think that the fact that “so much blood” came out of the wound indicates that you fully expect to be able to get through to him – in your heart you believe that you’ll get to the source of the problem. If, in your dream, you had hit him on the head and nothing had come out, I’d worry that you might be fighting a losing battle and that (down inside) you knew it.

Think about how this relates to your situation. I’d be willing to bet that a light bulb has already appeared!

Again, this is absolutely not an omen for anything. If, by coincidence, he cuts himself shaving or you have an argument about what movie to see Friday night – know this: The dream did not predict or cause either one. Dreams rely on what happened yesterday, not tomorrow.

If your dreams seem to be a series of fear and panic, you are experiencing a great deal of worry and concern in your life.  There is at least one thing you are afraid of happening (or not happening).  When the worry is resolved, your dream self will be less anxious!

A few days ago, one of my daughters and I were talking about we’ll often solve a problem or get a great idea while we’re lying in bed – either close to sleep or having just woke up. I’ll often get a great idea for a post or the ingredients for a killer recipe when I’m either close to sleep or just coming out of its blissful state!

Researchers actually back up our experiences

Experts say that we have the ability to solve problems in our sleep because most memory consolidation occurs while your brain is in a resting state. Studies have even shown that students who review schoolwork right before bedtime have a much better chance of remembering the information for the next day’s test or assignment.

If you are preparing for a test or a presentation at work, and you want the information to be stored as long-term memory, your best bet is to study the material right before bedtime.

By the same token, if you have a certain dilemma in your life and you’re searching for a solution, give it a great deal of thought as you fall asleep. Your chances for waking up next to the solution are outstanding!

I’ve been having dreams lately about losing things.  In my dreams, I lose my keys, my truck, my belt.  In one dream, I lost my German Shepherd.  I don’t really have a problem with losing things in my real life.  Certainly not my dog and truck.  What do these dreams mean?  There have been about 8 of them and I always wake up feeling frustrated and annoyed.

Dreaming of losing things is often a signal that there are just too many things going on in your life.  When you’re being pulled in a great number of directions and/or you have a number of people counting on you, sometimes you feel like you’re losing control.

For example, I once heard from a man who had similar dreams.  Turns out he was working a full time job and raising two sons by himself.  Teenagers, at that.  He said that he’d recently been given more responsibilities at work as well.  When his dreams caused him to step back and realize that he was losing touch with what mattered most, he cut back on the overtime he was getting and boldly went to his boss to explain the situation.  When he pointed out that he felt his sons needed him more at home, he says his boss was actually very impressed and helped him out a great deal.

Without taking away his recent pay raise!  Cool bosses are so rare.

Take a good look at the way you described the feeling you got from the dreams:  Frustrated and annoyed. We can learn so much about our lives and mindsets from simply looking at the feelings our dreams give us.  You have undealt with frustrations in your life and I’d almost be willing to bet they stem from not having enough time to do everything you want to do.

Take steps to slow your life down and I promise you the dreams will leave as quickly as they came.

As a huge animal lover, I read a lot of books by Allen & Linda Anderson (we extreme animal lovers have to stick together, right?).  I was zipping along through their latest book, Angel Animals – Book of Inspiration when I came to a story that spoke to BOTH the dreamologist and the animal lover.

An iguana parent (Darry) from North Carolina was telling the story of their pet iguana, Bubbette.   When Bubbette was a baby, Darry had a very troubling dream one night. She dreamed that Bubbette got  into the garbage disposal and was killed.  The dream was so realistic and frightening that she literally woke up crying. Grisly

Several months passed and Darry was working in the kitchen one day, with Bubbette on her shoulder.  Darry cleared dishes, and generally took care of things that we all do after a meal – with Bubbette riding happily on her shoulder.

What happened next really makes the hair on your arms sit up:

I pushed scraps down the garbage disposal and switched it on.  When I turned around to pick up more dishes, I had a flashback of that dream.  Immediately, I spun back to the sink and flicked off the disposal – just in time.  Bubbette, for the first time ever, had taken a flying leap off my shoulder into the sink.  I caught her just as she was going down the disposal drain.

If I had not remembered that dream, Bubbette probably would have fallen into the garbage disposal before I could realize what was happening.  She was very small at the time, and would have slid easily into the hole and met an untimely demise.

Thank goodness the little cutie was spared by her mom’s dream!

I found something else fascinating about the dream.  This Iguana lover spends a great deal of time promoting the safety and care of Iguanas.  She belongs to a rescue group that discourages people from adopting iguanas until they’ve read “Iguanas for Dummies” (great, great advice, by the way – A LOT more goes into bringing an iguana into your family than you’d think).  This concern and compassion for this animal made its way into her dream, and saved her own little girl in the process!

This is just another clear example of why I tell people, “Never, ever ignore your dreams.”

A Recently Submitted Dream for Analysis:

I always dream about not being able to find my way somewhere, or not being able to find something that I knew was there before. I either can’t find my way home, or can’t find my way out of a house, or can’t find the proper road, etc. Last night’s dream – I put my bag in a post office box (that was on the outside of the post office for some reason), and then when I went to find it, I couldn’t. I went up and down streets looking for the box I put my bag in, but couldn’t find it. One other time, I was trying to find my way home and kept walking on different roads that kind of looked familiar, but were not the roads I needed to get home. One other was I was in a house with many rooms, and could not find my way out of it. All my dreams are like this, and I wake up before I find my way. What does this type of dream mean?

Fascinatingly enough, your dreams are actually covering several areas.  They’re taking you by the hand and pulling you in several directions.  It’s a wonder you aren’t completely frazzled!

Dreams of Being Lost

The key symbolism for dreams in which we lose our way (or can’t find it in the first place) is frustration.  It’s a pretty common dream theme, simply because all of us are familiar with being frustrated. Whether it’s in school, at home, at work, or in a relationship – we all know the feeling of wanting something to go THIS way as we sit and watch it defiantly go THAT way instead!

Many Christians will experience dreams such as this when they feel that they’re “losing their way,” or that they aren’t reading their Bible often enough, praying enough, etc.  I interpreted a dream for a lady,once,  who had gone to her Catholic church for over 20 years.  An injury at work left her unable to leave her house for a couple of months.  She had dreams just about every night of losing either her teeth, her hair, her clothes, etc.  Her church was such a huge part of her life that she felt like she was actually “losing herself.”    I suggested that she call up members of her church and invite them over for coffee.  When they found out how much she missed them, a few ladies began automatically coming by after each service – bringing her cookies, drinking coffee with her, and telling her what had gone on at the service.  Is that sweet or what?!   The dreams ended because she didn’t feel the loss so  much any longer.

Dreams of Losing Objects

When we dream of losing something, it’s an indication that we feel we have, indeed, lost something.  Parents who have young children suddenly enrolled in school (whether it’s first grade or college) will have frequent dreams like this because they subconsciously feel that they’ve lost something. Soon, however, they realize they haven’t lost the child at all and the dreams fade away.

On an even deeper level, many people who have made compromises in relationships (personal or professional) will have these dreams because they feel that they’ve lost a piece of themself.

I’d say that your dreams are definitely trying to tell you something.  Any time dreams recur like this, there’s an underlying issue or emotion.  I like to think of these hidden emotions as unopened e-mail.   You know when you log in to your e-mail, it’ll tell you when you have unopened mail?  Recurring dreams serve the same basic function – alerting us that we have undealt with emotions.

When we click on the unopened mail, the message goes away.  We’ve dealt with it and there’s no need for it to bring anything to our attention any longer.

Think of your dreams along these lines.  Spend a little time with yourself (no distractions) and ask yourself what losses you feel – whether they are literal, physical losses or emotional.   More likely than not, you’ll get in touch with feelings you didn’t even fully realize you were having.

Below is a dream submitted this past week:

I every once in a while have this dream. I am eating something sometimes, but there are other times it just happens. I get a string caught during swallowing and I have to loosen my throat muscles to pull it back out. When i attempt to pull it out, it is a never ending string that just goes on and on and on. I see myself and feel myself pulling for a long time. The thing that is weird is that I can feel this and I dread dreaming this. It is soo uncomfortable. Is this a common dream? What is your interpretation of this dream? Thanks!

I’ve read your dream through four times to try to get a really good handle on it. If you had just had this dream once I would have thought it was connected to something like flossing before bed.  I have a tendency to floss too hard sometimes and if my gums bleed, I can expect to be harmed at some point in my dreams.  Needless to say, I’ve started being more careful when flossing!

The fact that you’ve had this sort of dream more than once leads me to believe that there’s a little more to it than just this sort of “association” type of dream.

When I read your dream I get the feeling that your predominant emotion during the dream is frustration.  Sure, it’s uncomfortable and the situation puts you in a bad position, but I think the most important thing to notice is that you feel frustrated by several things:

1.  You’re frustrated that the choking occurs in the first place – as you said, sometimes even when you aren’t eating in your dream.

2.  You’re frustrated that you have to contort your throat muscles in a manner to try to prevent the choking.

3.   You’re frustrated that you pull and pull but can’t get to the  end of the string.

In dreams that I call “Frustration Dreams,” you can usually expect to hear the dreamer use the following phrases:

• It went on and on and on…
• It seemed like it took forever…
• No matter what I did, I couldn’t…..
• No one would listen to me…..
• Never ending…
• Impossible…..

They also will frequently comment about something lasting a long time.   When I read “…it is a never ending string that just goes on and on and on….” in your dream description, I knew we were dealing with a frustration dream of some type.  It’s an absolutely beautiful example of this type of dream.

Usually frustration dreams are brought on by things in our day to day life that we feel powerless against.  These things are either courtesy of other people (things others do that frustrate us) or they’re courtesy of our ourselves (things we, ourselves, do that frustrate us).

The fact that your frustration dream involves the face is very, very important.  This is a key symbolism that means the frustration is extremely personal.  When we dream about a part of our body, it means  that that dream meaning is a very personal one.

The tricky thing is that this could mean one of two things, and only you will know for sure which one it is. Your dream is an indication that you are either:

1. Frustrated by a habit or thought that you can’t quit doing or thinking.  Many people have this sort of dream when they can’t quit procrastinating, can’t “get over” an ex, can’t stop a particular habit such as biting their nails or smoking, etc.  I once had a string of frustrating dreams when I consistently failed to make time to exercise!
2. If you aren’t frustrated with something that the person in the mirror is or isn’t doing, then the dream would indicate that you are frustrated with something someone else does.  This person would be someone extremely close to you – someone who would be of the utmost importance to you.  The symbolism of your mouth would indicate that it is probably someone you are connected to in a  romantic way.

I want to mention something about choking dreams.  If you had experienced an isolated dream about choking and your emotions were primarily fear and/or embarrassment, I would suggest that you had recently said something you regretted.   However, you have had several of these dreams and you just don’t strike me as a person who puts their foot in their mouth on a daily basis!

Also, as I said before, the primary emotion seems to be frustration.

As for bringing an end to the dreams, my first suggestion would be to try very hard NOT to think about the dreams or their details.  Before bedtime, think about anything and everything BUT these dreams – or about anything that frustrates you at all.  Read a great novel, watch television, or take a blissful bubble bath.

Finally, if you can pinpoint where the frustration is coming from, you’ll double your odds of ending these dreams.
