Nightmares!
Nightmares cause a myriad of emotions, the most common ones being fear and anxiety. The themes vary but we all have them at one time or another. Many are so horrendous that we bolt up, wide-eyed and crazed, looking as hideous as whatever was persuing us in the dream!
What causes nightmares? There are a number of possibilities. Some can be caused by medications, illnesses or fever. Fever induced nightmares are especially warped and twisted. Anyone who has experience this type of dream knows just how out of whack a feverish mind is.
Many people experience nightmares following a traumatic event such as surgery, a car wreck or the loss of a loved one. Others suffer from nightmares during stressful times such as moving, starting a new job, losing an old job, divorce, etc. Some of us overachievers experience nightmares for no apparent reason whatsoever.
What can be done about nightmares? If they are particularly troublesome and/or recurring, it would behoove you to take a close look at the particulars of the dream. Nightmares which deal with a recent traumatic event, such as the loss of a loved one, are actually part of your healing process. While ranging from annoying to disruptive, they are serving a need within your subconcious. Time generally takes care of these types of dreams. Just keep telling yourself that there is an end to them and that you get closer to this end with each dream.

Having said that, do you know that many people aren't bothered by nightmares whatsoever? There are many otherwise sane people who are intrigued and fascinated by the creativity on parade within nightmares. Our oldest daughter, in fact, is disappointed when her dreams fall under the ospice of normal. She's let down and somehow feels cheated!
