Herbs for Better Sleep
We want to urge you to please use caution when using herbal supplements. Many people don't realize it, but herbs can be dangerous when used in excess. They can also negatively interact with medications you may be taking. Read all labels carefully, and when buying an herbal supplement, take the bottle to the store's pharmacist and ask her (or him) how safe they believe that particular herb to be.
When researching for this particular article, we came across a plethora of information. However, we only used data we gathered from medical sources. We also only included the herbs which these "experts" mentioned or recommended. Going outside of these perimeters makes us uneasy for your safety, and should have at least the same effect on you. The average person has the mistaken notion that herbs are synonymous with spices, and practically as harmless as salt. I guess this premise came from the fact that herbs are used for cooking, so people assume they're perfectly harmless.
Big mistake. Herbs are medicinal. Used appropriately, they can achieve many of the same effects of medications that we're familiar with. And in the same way we wouldn't take random medication to treat ourselves, we shouldn't take herbs freely either.
The safest two herbal sedatives are valerian and kava. Apparently, the experts feel that chamomile, lavender, lemon balm and passion flower also may be helpful in getting to sleep and sleeping more soundly - with the fewest side effects.
In our own personal experience, the best way to use herbs for sleep is in the form of aromatherapy. Lavender is our herb of choice. We buy bath products, lotion, candles (and now even fabric softener) with this incredibly soothing scent. Some people even put lavender leaves and flowers between their mattresses or under their pillows. (We have an unusually inquisitive cat, so we've never tried this. If you do, let us know how it works!)
This may seem extreme, and unnecessarily costly - and both of those assumptions are probably right - but we have one fabric softener we use for the day (for our clothes, kitchen towels, etcl) and a separate one, the lavender-scent, is solely for our evening laundry (gowns, p.j.s, pillow cases, towels, sheets, comforters, blankets, quilts...). This way, everything associated with the late hours smells the same - like peace, rest and relaxation. As soon as you grab a lavender-scented throw, you immediately feel at ease. Be warned, if you wrap up in one to watch Sunday afternoon sports - you probably won't see the whole game!
