A frequent dream analysis request on Dream Prophesy goes something like this:  “What does it mean to dream about an ex?  Does it mean I want them back?!“  Most people seem astonished to dream of their ex because, in their conscious state, the last thing they’d want is to have the ex back!

More times than not, when you dream about an ex (girlfriend, boyfriend, husband, wife), it isn’t really THEM that your dream represents.  Usually (though not always, of course) it’s the period of time that your mind is revisiting – your ex just happens to be there.  In the same way that our AWAKE mind revisits the past, through memories, sometimes our ASLEEP mind does the same.

If we’re going through a stressful time in our lives and seem to have more on our proverbial plate than we ever asked for – our mind will take us to a “simpler time” – if an ex happens to be there, it isn’t necessarily a compliment to them.  They just happened to be in the picture at the time.

However, if it becomes a recurring dream, the analysis may be a little different.  Here’s an example:

Trudie was married to a man named Carl, a wonderful man who she was crazy about.  His only vice, her e-mail said, was that he was a workahaulic.  He worked 12 hours a day and, when he came home, all he wanted to talk or think about was work.  Other than that, they were happily married and had a comfortable life.

However, she began to dream about her ex-husband regularly.  In her dreams, they were always having fun – doing things they used to do together (fishing, hiking, going to movies…).  She was beginning to think that her subconcious mind wanted Mr. Wrong back instead of Mr. Right!

She was reliveved to find out that her subconcious mind was simply giving her a message – she missed doing the things she once did and a part of her wished that her second husband had as much fun with life as her first one did.  After all, she said, it was the only thing he ever got right!

Without mentioning the dreams or husband #1′s name (of course), Trudie told Carl that he needed to lighten up and enjoy life more.  The whole business of work-related subjects being the only words out of his mouth had gotten very old, very fast.  She made arrangements for them to go fishing one weekend and Carl fell in love with it so much, she now kind of wishes he’d give her a Saturday OFF the lake!

Examine your dreams and see if there’s a hidden message, such as the one above.  9 times out of 10 there isn’t a specific message – your subconscious simply wanted to take a stroll down memory’s lane… and you-know-who just happened to be there!

What does it mean to dream about ex-lovers?

I had a dream where my twin sister and boyfriend were dating. They have not met yet. In the dream, we tell each other how much we love each other. But as the dream progressed it seemed as if I had given them permission to see each other since he and I were on our way out of our relationship. I rarely dream, and when I do, I never remember them…but this one is staying with me. Could someone tell me if there is a meaning behind this dream>

WOW, THANK YOU SOOO MUCH. My ex wife left me about 3 years ago; her choice, not mine. I’m happily remarried now, but for the last few months, it seems like at LEAST 3 times a week I’ve had a dream about my ex wife, and we are always doing something fun that her and I used to do. My wife now, is wonderful, but just doesn’t enjoy doing the kind of things that my ex wife and I used to go do. But after reading the story about Trudie, it makes much more sense. My dreams aren’t about me wanting my ex back….it’s just about missing some of the fun activities we used to do together!! Whew! Thank you SOO much!!

  12. Fred says:

I had a dream that after me and my ex broke up, we found out she was pregnant with our baby. The dream took place in the hospital and I was waiting on the pregnancy. I was in the room when she finally gave birth and I saw the baby first. I thought the boy looked a lot like her but also had some of my features. I was incredibly happy. I kissed my ex. The dream was very vivid and real feeling. Other things went on like my mom and friends coming to see the baby. The baby smiled at me once, and i was very very happy.

The dream was pretty emotional and brings up some interesting questions. Its especially odd since one of the downfalls of our relationship was my unwantingness to loko ahead to stuff like having a kid.

  20. I keep having recurring dreams about my ex husband. Not the same dream but the same ending and scenario. We have been divorced now since 2001. However we got back together several time (including 2 years ago) to try to work things out. I did not want the divorce and had no idea the divorce was coming. I was 25 when i got divorced. He cheated on me numerous time, however there was 1 married woman in particular he would/could not stay away from. He continued to cheat on me with her (while she was still married) when we tried to work things out each time. I however was not aware the cheating was still going on. She is now divorced and they are together dating no longer in secret. I love him and always will love him as i married him because i loved him, but when i dream about him they are always happy dreams and i start missing him and wanting to be with him and wanting to know why he can’t commit to me but he can say he commits to her. He is a sex addict as has been diagnosed, but i always think what if. i know he loves me and wishes he could be the faithful person, but i don’t think it is in his ability to be faithful. I do still love him. So why am i continuing to dream about him when i know we don’t work? Any help would be appreciated

  27. Amanda says:

So on two separate occasions last night I had dreams of my husband with girls from his past. We moved away from home and don’t see anyone anymore which I really like because everywhere we went we’d see someone he knew and typically they were girls. Moving on, so we went to the high school he went to because he is a big lacrosse alum and likes to see where the team is going and how things have changed. So we go there and for some reason I go into the girls locker room and he says he’s going to go skate these stairs and I asked him to wait for me because I had never been there before and all the classes were about to be let out so I knew it would be that much harder to find him. I text him and ask him where he is and he says on the stairs with alli and Vanessa who are both girls he’s dated. At this rate I’m furious and it feels so real I feel my body getting super angry. I walk out there and he’s smiling at me and these girls are like wow, you’ve grown up so much. You’re married and having a baby blah blah and he’s the type of person who loves the attention especially from people who had some sort of importance in his life because he likes the whole this could had been you factor. And he’s standing there talking to these girls and I walk down the stairs cause I’m so mad and start walking home he doesn’t even realize I left because he’s too busy bragging about himself and loving the attention from the girls. I don’t get it!
Then the second dream is kinda a part 2 of all those events cause we end up meeting his art teacher and she tells us she set up an art gallery in this house and we should check it out. So there is like 3 cars of people that go including that alli girl again and break into this art gallery. We are all looking at the art and talking whatever and the cops come and I guess I was sleeping when this happened cause I’m pregnant and do that a lot. So they are all eating breakfast and I wake up far away from everyone else and see everyone laughing and talking and my husband has that girl siting on his lap and they are laughing and all I can do is watch. I go numb and it’s like I don’t even exist. I don’t know what any of this means but it scares me because we are so young and married and now having a child I feel like this isn’t where he wants to be.

  28. Jackie says:

I have a wonderfulmarriage now…I am I love with my husband, but I have a reoccurring dream 2 times a month at least for 13 years straight…that I’m in love with my ex and he with me..and my heart is breaqking and exploding with love for him….in the dream it is never sexual…but always about love…..I’m confused because I can’t stand this person in reality…

  29. Brian says:

I am also having strange dreams, if someone can help. I dated a girl in high school for a couple years, and she was what you would probably call my first love. After the relationship ended, we remained friends until years later, when a girl I was dating basically made me choose one or the other.. I chose her, which looking back was probably the wrong decision. Anways, fast forward 9 years. I haven’t talked to my high school sweetheart in 9 years, and I’ve been (for the most part) happily married for almost 4 of those years. I keep dreaming of my high school sweetheart, and have no idea why.
I haven’t been thinking about her until I wake up from a dream about her. Last night I dreamt that I was in my next door neighbors house, and one of my other friends ex’s showed up at the door looking for him. We hid, and watched through a window. When she left, she was with my ex from high school. I ran out the door to talk to her, as I hadn’t seen her in literally YEARS. She cried and was begging me to leave my wife and just run away with her, telling me she was still in love with me.
Very vivid dream, and I have no idea what caused it. It’s thrown my whole day off. I looked up my ex and she’s engaged, and like I said, I’m happily married. My wife does once in a blue moon refer to my ex as “the one that got away” when she’s joking with me, but not anytime lately. Any thoughts?

  30. miranda says:

The night before last I had an awful nightmare. It was about my ex-boyfriend who I had dated on and off for 6 years. In reality he was orally abusive, cheated on me, stole things from me, took money, you get the idea. So not a man I want back.
In the dream, I was at the gym talking to a friend who I am still friends with (in reality) but is also my ex’s best friend. We were waiting for a class to start but then he turned his head towards the room we were waiting for and noticed my ex. He told me, and becoming extremely nervous I ran for somewhere to hide. No matter how far I ran I couldn’t get away. I found a room that they were just finishing to re-build. Since I was lost I tried asking someone in the room that I thought could help me. Looking around if my ex was in the room, but having a hard time since I didn’t have my glasses or my contacts on, I could barely see. I went into the room anyway, and asked the man for the way out. He took his sweet time explaining the directions. I could hear voices in the background and I heard his, my ex’s.
Then the man I was talking to said my name to grab back my attention and my ex noticed me for the first time in the dream. I told the man I had to go and I bolted. Not being able to see well, I scrambled for a way out.
I finally found a hallway and ran. I could feel my ex following me. He was screaming my name but I wouldn’t stop. Then I was on my college campus grounds in Vermont.
I finally found a room, the men’s locker room, where I knew someone who would stop him, my brother who despises my ex. But he is no where near as strong as my ex is. The only man I trusted to be able to get rid of him is my current boy-friend who is a prop in rugby, which requires you to be bigger and in excellent shape. Even though I tried to find him he was no where in site. My brother saw my ex and started screaming at him; I started crawling on the floor to find a way out. As soon as I got up to open the door I woke up.
I haven’t been with my ex for over a year now and I stopped having nightmares of him a while back. So why am I having them again? And why are they so vivid? I woke up crying and panting, and I don’t know how to get rid of these dreams. Please help.

  32. Monica says:

I divorced my ex-husband 3 years ago. I am in another relationship and extremely happy with him. For about the last 3 weeks I have been having dreams about my ex-husband. In my dreams I’m no longer with my current boyfriend and my ex comes back and wants to get back together with me. In my dream I say no that I’m happy by myself. But he still comes and visits and talks to me in my dreams. He even tries to hang out with me and my friends. What does that mean??
