Keep a Dream Journal - Why Bother?

Want a key to unlock your inner wisdom? Try keeping a dream journal.
Experts believe that our nighttime dreams deal with concerns, worries, or events that we experience during our waking hours. A study done in 2003 speculated that about 50-percent of people have work-related nightmares.

In brief, dreams are like moves that streams through our minds, directed and produced by our subconscious. Dreams can help solve knotty problems, or simply give voice to ongoing issues. Some dreamers even implant a before-bed suggestion to dream a solution to a specific problem, like “tonight’s dream will help me overcome my problem with Jack.”

The connection between dreams and our subconscious has been speculated on for centuries. In fact, Aristotle theorized that there is a definite connection between dreams, emotional needs and waking experiences. However, in order to take full advantage of our nighttime movies, we need to keep dream journals that record as much detail as can be remembered.

To fully understand our dreams, experts like Carl Jung and Ira Progoff, believe a series of dreams must be examined, not just a single night’s images. To assist in the interpretative process, the following steps are suggested:

1. Date and time your dream. You may find that the dreams you have just before waking have different themes than those right after going to sleep. When you date your dream, don’t forget to include the year.

2. Title your dreams, like The Monkey Attacked the Cow, Airplanes Explode over the North Pole, or Jack Won’t Stop Pulling My Hair. Over a period of time, you’ll probably find recurring themes, like dreams with spiders, or plane crashes, or being chased.

3. Briefly note the day’s events. If you write down any irritations, worries, angers, or heightened emotions you had during the day, you may be able to see a clear correlation between the day’s events and your dreams.

4. Record your dream in as much detail as possible, including the emotions you experienced during the dream, AND the emotions you experienced in recording the dream. Feel free to illustrate your dream, either through a drawing or photograph.

5. List the important keywords from your dream. These might be words like love, hero, flying, snakes, puppies, peace or death.

6. Interpret the dream. Without using devices like a dream dictionary, try to interpret what you feel the dream was about. Was it about being trapped, breaking free, venting strong emotions, taking a journey, or?? There is no right or wrong answer–so allow yourself the freedom of speculating on a meaning.

7. Look for recurring themes. Once a month, look back through your dream journal, searching for repeating patterns. If you find one, your inner self is trying its best to give you an important message. Don’t forget to look for patterns in your list of important keywords.

Sweet dreams!

Animals in Dreams

Writing by Joi on Friday, 3 of February , 2006 at 8:36 pm

Very often, the animals in our dreams will indicate a trait or behaviour that we’re lacking and wish we possessed.

For example, a shy and insecure person may dream of animals such as lions….especially if they’re going through something in their life that being bolder would be helpful in.

Case in point: I recently had an e-mail from a young man who had been dreaming of a particularly large lion (he said it was more the size of a “freakin’ elephant.”). The same lion had a recurring role in his dreams and, in total, had shown up about 5 times in 5 different dreams!

Each of this young man’s e-mails were very short, and I had to pull information out of him. He was incredibly sweet and friendly, but in the early e-mails I got the impression that he was a little shy. Feeling that I was onto something, I asked him if there was anything going on in his life that he thought might be “noteworthy.”

He responded with a description of a “totally cute” girl who recently began working at the grocery store where he did. So, I asked him if he wanted to ask her out. He responded with a “YESSSS!”, but then said he didn’t have the nerve. He went on to say that he was afraid that one of the other workers would beat him to the punch….especially a “Justin” who my guy was really worried about.

My initial thoughts were right. My lovesick 17 year old e-mail buddy was suffering from shyness. I told him that the lion represented the boldness that his conscience wanted desperately for him to summon up. I told him that the exaggerated size of the lion meant that it was urgent for him to act on his impulse. He promised to try to do just that.

I got the e-mail back that I’d been hoping and watching for and it absolutely made my day…more like week! I haven’t stopped smiling yet because this sweet young man asked the young lady to go eat pizza with him and her reply was, “I’d love to. I was hoping you’d ask me out!”

Sorry, Justin.

Dragon’s Dream

Dragon's Dream

Dragon’s Dream
Buy this Poster at AllPosters.com

I saw this poster this afternoon while looking for one featuring fairies. I know how colorful and fascinating my Dream blog visitors are and knew y’all would find it as hot as I did! Love the expression on the fairies little face….like she’s amused with the dragon - or planning out what she’ll turn him into with a little fairy dust.

Dreaming of fairies OR dragons indicates that the dreamer is extremely creative - so much so that very, very often people just don’t get him or her. This type of person gets a lot of “What were they thinking?” type of looks….which is always fine with them as they enjoy the mystique!

Separation Anxiety

Writing by Joi on Thursday, 5 of January , 2006 at 1:12 pm

The most recent dream submitted to us for dream analysis involves a common waking emotion. Here’s the dream:

Have you ever seen the movie The Sixth Sense? If so, perhaps you’ll understand my dream more correctly. (I haven’t seen this movie in months.)

I dreamed I was a few miles from the house, walking home. I started to run trying to get home faster. I noticed I was running really fast without getting tired. I looked at my watch and it was around 5:45pm, not dark just yet. I challenged myself to try to get home before 6:00pm.

As I was running home, the road passes by the access road to a local lake. I noticed the water level was really high due to recent flooding. As I was running by, I passed an ambulance going to the lake. I thought to myself that someone had drowned.

I continued on my way home but the road become extremely steep. So steep, I had to look up and pull with all I had with both hands to get over the hill. I thought I might fall at anytime. With great effort, I finally made it to the top which was close to home. As I got close to home, I began to get a feeling that maybe I was dead. For some reason, I was carrying a paper grocery sack full of my belongings. I reasoned that if I was dead, I would drop end up dropping the sack without trying. As I got near the house I saw my wife carrying my son was waiting on the road. As I went up to her, she didn’t respond but my son did. He started smiling. That’s when the sack dropped.

I stood on the road feeling a total emptiness feeling. I started pacing back and forth and my wife stood there. Within a few minutes my parents walked up and talked with her. They drove off and she started messing with her dress, straightening it up. She seemed very sad. I wanted so bad to hold her but couldn’t.

At this point I woke up to the alarm clock.

The strongest symbol in the dream is the House. A house is a symbol of safety and comfort. We associate it with being safe from the world as well as from anything that could “unsettle” us. The difficulty they dreamer had with making it home, combined with his great desire to get there speaks of at least one unsettling thing he has recently faced in his life.

The second thing that’s really noteworthy is the fact that there’s an underlying fear of being separated from loved ones - in this case a wife and son. This is a very common theme in dreams and is attributed to a separation anxiety of some sort. While it sometimes represents something that the dreamer has recently been “separated” from (such as a friendship, relationship, job, position, ability, etc..), it usually represents something that he or she fears being separated from. For example, I knew of a lady who was having lots of dreams where she couldn’t get to her family. She was nearly making herself sick worrying about the meaning behind the dreams. As it turned out, she had taken a new job (with more hours) and, deep down, was simply worried about the toll it would take on her family.

Other times, there have been dreamers with sons or daughters entering school (or going off to college) who have dreams of this nature. The tricky thing is that most of the time, the person or thing we’re actually worrying about isn’t even in the dream!

In this particular instance, the wife and son may simply represent something or someone else that’s important to the dreamer. The unconcious mind, wanting to represent or symbolize “importance” or “love” calls up two of the people who mean the most to the dreamer. You can’t get any closer than a spouse or child!

Sometimes we go to bed with things on our mind that we don’t fully even realize we’re packing around. Nine times out of ten, it’s these thoughts that make their way into the plot of our dreams. It’s amazing how our minds will interpret the data and give us feedback in the form of fascinating dreams!

Thank you so much for sharing your dream with us.

May 2006 be full of wonderful things for you and your family!!

Axe Dreams

Writing by Joi on Wednesday, 28 of December , 2005 at 12:11 am

Axes are symbolic of action and force. When seen in dreams, they are usually telling the dreamer that he or she needs to take action if they want to meet their goals and fulfill their dreams.

Nothing worthwhile comes from sitting around and waiting. Sometimes we need to have a fire lit under our feet, and that’s the purpose of Axe dreams….to get us moving!

Dream Symbol: The Moon

Writing by Joi on Friday, 16 of December , 2005 at 1:05 pm

The moon is a symbol for the deepest emotions a person can feel. Only the dreamer knows for sure if these emotions are positive, like love or excitement…. or negative, like hate or envy.

Usually, though not always, when you dream of a moon - it is a sign that you are trying to hide or mask these emotions that you’re feeling.

If you’re unsure of which emotions your dream is referring to, think about the rest of the dream. Is someone else in the dream - or at least a symbol or representation of them. Sometimes the person, themself, isn’t in the dream, but our mind comes up with something to represent them. The sleeping mind prefers to “speak” in symbols, and this goes for people as well as things and emotions.

For example, if you have a co-worker who hunts, an elk or bear could possibly represent him.

Once you know a few of the facts about the dream, the emotions should be pretty obvious. If not, a quick trick is to think about how you felt in the dream. If you were anxious or even angry in the dream - the emotions probably lean toward a negative emotion. If you are at peace and/or happy in the dream, the emotions are probably positive.

If you still aren’t sure, let me know - I’ll try to help unravel the mystery!

Dreaming of Junk Food

Writing by Joi on Tuesday, 6 of December , 2005 at 7:20 pm

Here’s a really unique dream interpretation request! Someone recently asked, “What does it mean if I dreamt that I was eatting tons of junk food?”

The dreamer reads my dream blog and visits my website, Dream Prophesy, so I love her muchly! So, I really hate having to be the bearer of unhappy tidings, but…..

This dream indicates that the dreamer knows that she has been filling her mind and life with useless things. More than likely this is something that has only recently become a pattern. Otherwise, it wouldn’t still be “news” in her mind’s world!

Deep down, inside, she realizes that she needs to spend her time more wisely and energies more productively.
She didn’t say anything else about her life, but I’d wager to guess that she’s either a student who hasn’t been hitting the books quite as much as she should or she’s been slacking off just a bit at work.

The fact that she had this dream shows that she’s an intelligent and intuitive person. Her intellectual side just wants very much for her fun side to remember that!

Best of luck!

Dream Analysis: Virgin Territory

Writing by Joi on Monday, 5 of December , 2005 at 7:10 pm

A recent dream submitted through the Contact form was from a female who had been having recurring dreams of losing her virginity. When she awoke, she felt weird because of the dreams.

The secret of this dream’s analysis lies in the feelings upon wakening. Had the dreamer felt good about the dreams, (or even aroused) I’d say that the interpretation was a passionate one, and that apparently there was someone in her life that she felt very attracted to - either a boyfriend, a worker at a local grocery store, or even a star - like the Depp.

However, because the feelings, upon wakening seem to be not entirely favorable - that indicates that the dream isn’t really coming from a good place.

Usually this sort of dream indicates that the dreamer has lost something or is afraid of losing something. Most of the time, this “something” is actually “someone,” but not always. It could be a job, a reputation, a car, an elderly relative… It could even be anxiety over an upcoming grade.

I’ve also known this dream to indicate a troubled, indecisive mind. Perhaps there’s something in your life that you aren’t entirely 100% sure how you feel about - you’re able to see both sides of the situation and it’s nearly driving you nuts!

As with all recurring dreams, try really hard not to think much about the dreams - especially at bedtime. This increases your chances of having a re-run. Think about anything BUT the dreams….read, watch tv, listen to the radio - just put your mind as far away from the dream subject as you possibly can!

Good luck and Sweet dreams!

Dream Guide: Sweet Kisses!

Writing by Joi on Saturday, 3 of December , 2005 at 12:55 pm

Recently, we received an e-mail from a girl who had dreamed of kissing her ex-boyfriend. She wondered what the dream meant, if anything. Oh, yeah, it means something all right!

Dreaming of an ex-love would seem to indicate that the guy or gal, themself, would still be in your heart and on your mind - and that very well may be - but it could also be that what the dreamer misses most is the feeling of being in love with and involved with someone. There have been people who, after divorced, have frequently dreamt of their ex-spouse. Many end up very confused, because they know beyond a shadow of doubt that they’re out of love rather than in love - and they also know they don’t want this particular person back. But here they are dreaming about them…so they’re very confused.

Actually, in these cases, it isn’t the person they’re missing. They miss having someone to share life with, someone to go for long drives with, someone to drink coffee with, someone to watch tv with, etc. This particular person, for obvious reasons, represents that relationship.

So, only the dreamer his or herself can say for sure if they’re still in love or not. Base it upon how you feel while awake and in your right mind. If this person wanted back in your life, would you let them? If you would, you still have feelings left for them. If they, however, have moved on, the dream may be telling you that you need to do the same. If they haven’t moved on, the dream may just be encouraging you to give them a call…or at least an email!

Dreaming of kissing indicates that you have intimacy, romance, love, and (probably) sex on your mind! It can also symbolize a desire to “make up” with someone - as in kiss and make up.

Since it was an ex that this dreamer was kissing, I think they’d very much like to kiss and make up…and I hope with all my heart that they get a chance to do just that!!!

Sweet dreams,
Joi
