“Dreams are answers to questions we haven’t yet figured out how to ask.” ~X-Files
Wow! That’s one of the greatest quotes I’ve ever heard/read about the fascinating world of dreams. And it was from a television show - go figure. Someone has a great handle on dreams and what they mean…..that literally sums it up beautifully.
That’s, essentially, what we’re seeking, isn’t it?

RECENTLY SUBMITTED DREAM:
To put this dream in context, I should tell you that I am a lawyer in real life. I walk into a night club. I have never been in it before I push my way through a crowd to the brightly-lit bar area.. I immediately see L, a woman I had an affair with for six years although it ended eight years ago and we have only spoken once since it ended. L is with a man, whom I know as P. I acted in a case for P about eight years ago. However, in my dream I do not know his as a former client, but as an old friend of L’s and who I last saw with L’s friend (and a former colleague of mine), M.. I wonder where L’s husband is. L is wearing rather dowdy clothes, including black tights and a skirt that comes below the knee. She would never wear these clothes in real life. I walk past and say “Hello” to L. She gives a perfunctory “Hello” back. I then walk past her and go to the other side of the bar to get a drink. My plan is to get a drink and sit and glance through some training notes for an appeals tribunal I am due to sit on. This tribunal exists only in my dream, and I have only a vague idea of exactly what it is. There is a huge crush at the bar. I push my way to the front. The barman cannot cope with everyone attempting to buy drinks. I reach over the bar and pick up a green crystal decanter that I am aware contains grapefruit juice. My intention is to assist the barman, but I don’t know how this does assist him. The barman takes umbrage. He comes out from behind the bar and starts to push me, and then puts his hands around my throat. I push him away. I am then walking out of the club, but am joined by S. S is a former colleague and business partner of mine at my previous law firm. In real life, he and his wife were close friends of L, and he had sex with her during the break-up of our affair. I ask S “What’s the gossip?” hoping to find out if he knows why L is with P and not her husband. He does not realise that I am talking about L, and thinks I know about an incident at my old firm. He tells me that he has just paid out some money to V (another lawyer I used to work with) after she claimed to have been raped at their Christmas party by another lawyer whom I know in my dream, but who does not exist in real life. I then ask S where L’s husband is. S immediately turns into J, another (female) lawyer who, in real life, works in a town about 25 miles from mine and with whom I have little contact. In my dream, I am aware that she, too, is to sit with me on this appeals tribunal. J (who in real life would know none of the people mentioned above except S) tells me that L and her husband have separated. When she tells me this, we are no longer in the night club but walking through some sand dunes. J suggests we go to another nightclub. In my dream, I intend to spend the evening drinking and I give thought to the fact that I have my car with me. We walk into another brightly-lit club and J orders drinks. I put a cigarette in my mouth and reach for the complimentary matches from the bar. The box, however, does not contain matches but a single earring which are rather dangly, have a pale blue stone in them, and had a fitting too wide for any ear. I then wake up.
When I’m analyzing dreams, I almost always have an initial, gut reaction that makes itself known in one sentence - actually it’s often more of a fragment. In fact, it’s usually just a couple of words such as, “confused and angry” or “overwhelmed with expectations.” After reading your dream, the words that came to mind were, “searching for answers.”
Before I get to the actual dream - I want to tell you and the other readers something you probably already know…but may not know you know! We all, based upon our careers, actually approach life differently. I’m a web publisher/writer who spends most of her time writing about self help. Dreamology is just one of the avenues. So when something happens in my life, I spend a great deal of time wondering how many others are going through this very thing and wondering how could I help them? Then, most of the time, my mind will start outlining a rough draft for a post or article.
As another example, I know a brilliant graphic artist who knows the ins and outs of PhotoShop, picture manipulation, airbrushing, etc. When we see a picture of a celebrity, her first reaction will often be something like, “Why’d they PhotoShop her so much?! She didn’t need all that.” or “They should’ve smoothed her skin out a little more…”
While we aren’t our careers - our careers are a great, great part of us. As a lawyer, you search for answers just about every minute of the day. You can’t be a passive, non-agressive, “This’ll take care of itself” type of person - you wouldn’t make much of a lawyer, would you?! You have to look everywhere the “answer” may lie and everywhere the “answer” couldn’t possibly lie.
I’d never really thought about it before - but that must make for a very interesting…if not at times frustrating….private life. You must want to always get to the bottom of situations and get your mind around all of it. Even when the only answer is something like, “It is what it is.” - Part of you must want to ask, “But WHY is it what it is instead of….” The very thing that makes you a good lawyer must leave you, at times, pulling your hair out.
I believe that you are currently looking for answers in your private life - and that the answers are of the utmost importance to you. I honestly can’t say if there’s someone in particular that you have feelings for right now, but the dream hints that there is. Generally (though certainly not always - as there aren’t many absolutes in dreamology), if there is someone we’ve known romantically who makes an appearance in our dreams, it’s symbolic of feelings we have. It doesn’t have to be the person, either - they more or less just represent love. They’re someone our mind associates with deep feelings, so the person becomes a symbol for the emotion(s).
Sometimes, the person IS the one we have feelings for in real life - but when that’s the case, the feelings manifest themselves in the dream, through contact or intense feelings.
I’d also say that recently someone has taken something you said or did the wrong way. The dream finds you “wanting to help” but being misunderstood and underappreciated (with the bartender). Whether it was someone you work with or for….or even a family member or friend, someone just didn’t “get you” and your mind - which is always searching for answers - is trying to figure out who was in the wrong: Them or you.
Finally, because of the number of things going on in the dream - as well as the number of people coming and going - I’d also say that you need a long weekend!
Seriously, I spend a great, great amount of time analyzing dreams and even more time studying and writing about stress/self help/relaxation (for Self Help Daily, Out of Bounds, and The Mental Fitness Center). I’ve found a huge correlation between stress and our dreams. Even before stress manifests itself in our daily life, we get “warnings” in our dreams. It’s as though our mind is saying, back up a little bit, dial it down some….or else you aren’t going to like where you’re headed. When this happens, our dreams will get really busy and will leave us scratching our proverbial head…with kind of a “What the he–?” look on our face.
If it’s possible, a week in the mountains or at the beach would be Heaven - but if you can’t get away, a weekend spent doing nothing but seeing how many dvds you can watch while seeing how much Chinese take-out you can devour will do wonders. I guess the bottom line is this: If you can’t turn your mind off for a while, at least change the channel. Give it something new to think about - like a great Keira Knightley movie. I think it would appreciate the change of scenery.
Thanks so much for sharing your dream - I hope you find everything you’re looking for!

I just found a comment with a Dream Analysis request on one of my posts titled “Dreams of Piercings.” I gave the analysis in the comments section of that post.
Thanks for your dream and I’m so,so, so sorry that I just came across it.
Bad blog for hiding it from me!

A recently submitted dream dealt with the affairs of the heart - just in time for Valentine’s week!
I had a really weird dream where I was standing on the 1st floor of a
building…and down on the floor were a lot of people. The ones I remember were a
teacher and a girl I know. There was this water fountain thing near me, so I
squirted some of the water at the girl, expecting just a little to hit her.
However, she was totally soaked. I went down and apologized to her, but she was
sorta sulking with me for the rest of the dream, no matter how many times I said
that I was sorry. She also said something like “I thought you were a nice
guy..I even sent you that Valentine’s present. ”
What could this dream mean?
A lot of dream guides would say that you had feelings of guilt from a previous relationship…but I actually don’t think that’s what is at the heart of the matter. You may or may not have these guilty feelings - but I think the symbolism is deeper than that.
I actually think that you have been the one who was either hurt or disappointed in a relationship. This could be a romantic relationship, a relationship with a friend - or even a family member. Whatever the case, I believe you were (at some point) hurt by something someone did or said. The symbolisms in the dream would indicate more a fear of “doing the wrong thing” rather than quilt over having done the wrong thing.
You don’t want to be hurt again - plain and simple. That’s very, very common - people who have been hurt constantly question themselves about what they could have done differently, but more times than not it was totally out of their hands.
I think the dream was just a manifestation of these little doubts and fears. Almost like they’re taunting you, “See…you might mess up and she’ll hate you….Sure, you meant to do the right thing, but it all blew up in your face…”
The best way to silence the fear is to face it. Realize that, sure, you may make mistakes - but the person on the other side of your heart will surely make them, too. Ask yourself this: If she were to make a little mistake, would you hate her or forgive her? You’d forgive…and so would she.
Thanks for sharing your dream and I wish you nothing but happiness!

My dream was about skating on the ice. I read in a dream analysis book that this
can for-tell losing my job or valuable articles. I’m not sure if this is the
correct analysis because I was actually playing hockey with full gear, of coarse
I was skating on the ice to play. The dream had me watching the other player’s
while on the bench. The line’s would switch then I was playing, just like
hockey. I remember playing farely good but not scoring. I seen I few goals
scored by other player’s. The game became closer and closer by the third period.
The pressure was felt amongst the two teams as the game reached near the end. I
looked up at the scored board and it was tied 5 to 5. I anticipated an early
opening where the puck was passed over to one of the other player’s and stole
it. At this point their were two player’s, one on each side on the opposite team
that reacted to the mistake. I was already on my way to breaking up the middle
to put myself on a breakaway. This is where the dream does not make sense to me.
I had the chance to break the tie and win the game if I skated fast enough to
break away from the opponents. This is where I wake up. Yaaa hooo! What kind of
BS is that? I’m curious as heck as to what this means. I’m confident I would
have scored that goal, only because I’m actually a good player in real life.
Anyway, things at work are ok I think, my relationship of 7 years is endind
though, maybe that’s got something to do with it? HELP!
Hi! What a frustrating dream, huh? As I was reading your dream, and “living” it along with you - I knew that you’d recently done one of three things:
1. Saw the end of a relationship.
2. Left, or were dismissed, from a job.
3. Just graduated or quit school.
I actually would have bet good money that it was #1, so I wasn’t surprised to read that this was the case. I am, however, very sorry for you if this is something you didn’t want to happen. Break-ups are tough, no matter what the circumstances.
The reason I was so certain this was your situation is because of the nature of the dream. This type of dream speaks of one thing - a need for closure. Your conscience is troubled by loose ends or by unanswered questions (like, “Why?”….”What did I do wrong?”…..”Why’d she/he do that?!”…..”Should we try again?”….”Will I ever find anyone else?”…etc.). The mind wants answers to everything - it’s like a newspaper reporter, it WANTS all the details even when we don’t have them.
That’s why, when it’s searching for answers…or for an “ending” that makes sense to it, the mind is suspect to open-ended dreams. It’s almost as if it’s intentionally telling its owner, “Look, you’ve left things undone….get it?!”
As for dream dictionaries and guides, the older ones really aren’t very reliable any more. The definition you describe is simply a guide making a play on the “skating on thin ice” metaphor. And while dreams do use a lot of symbolisms, this really wouldn’t apply to your dream since your ice couldn’t have supported all those hockey players if it were thin and on the verge of breaking.
I hope that you can either satisfy your mind with the answers and/or ending that it wants or that you can convince it that it’s time to move forward, answers or not.
Best of luck, and for what it’s worth, I believe you would have scored, too!
Thanks so much for your fascinating dream.

The Lavender Escape Diffuser, above, goes along with what we were talking about in the last post. This beauty actually fills your room with the relaxing, calming, bring-on-the-zzzzzs fragrance of lavender.
It’d be perfect for anyone, of course, but it seems like it’d be especially perfect for males who don’t necessarily want to smell like lavender. This way, they can still get their macho on - but still benefit from great sleep. And we all know that macho men need their rest!
Gorgeous, isn’t it?

Most of the e-mail I receive is from beautiful dreamers wanting to know what their dreams are trying to tell them. However, about 1 in 6 is from people who are experiencing problems with sleep in some way - snoring, insomnia, frequent waking, etc. A very common comlaint lately seems to be “falling asleep.” I’ve experienced this problem, myself, before and I know how frustrating it can be. The harder you try to drift OFF to sleep, the further you actually drift AWAY from sleep. Plus, when we have so much going on in our daily lives, it’s almost impossible to shut it all off at a moment’s notice. Web Designers will think of color schemes when the lights go off, salesmen will think of potential clients, teachers will think of students, etc.
I’ve been experimenting with a few natural remedies to see what I could recommend to those of you having this problem. I’ve come across a few that are as great as they’re cracked up to be.
First of all, lavender. See the body cream at the top of the post? It’s NATURALS Lavender & Chamomile Body Lotion from AVON and it’s Heaven in a bottle. If you were to ask a genie for a magical sleep balm, this is what she’d conjure up!
Also, Downy makes a Fabric Softener with lavender (in the purple bottle, of course) - I use it only on my linens and my family’s bed clothes. This way, the scent is associated with sleep. When you use the lotion only at night and your bed clohtes carry the same relaxing scent - you create a beautiful world that represents sleep and relaxation to your mind.
If you were to ask that same genie for a magical sleep elixer (after all, any genie worth their weight is going to give you more than one wish), she’d place a warm cup of Chamomile Tea in your hand before you even got the words out. My husband and I love tea and we’re always trying out new flavors, leaves, blends, etc. A few nights ago, I tried a Delicious new flavor from Celestial Seasonings: Honey Vanilla Chamomile. It was absolutely delicious, but the real amazing thing was how it relaxed me. I’ve been VERY much under the weather off and on all month, and it’s been interfering with my sleep (hard to sleep with a head and chest cold - you feel like you’re drowning and being suffocated at the same time!). The warmth of the tea seemed to open my breathing passages up while the Chamomile put a relaxing spell on me. Honestly, I can’t remember the last time I dozed off so fast.
Avon’s incredible line of Lavender-Scented products also includes the following. Click each link to give them a closer look. Their price and quality can’t be beat - I’d rank them a perfect 10 in every area.
