Natural Sleep Aids

Writing by Joi on Saturday, 20 of May , 2006 at 1:53 pm

I’m totally convinced that a lot of the problems we face can be directly linked to a lack of sleep. I’ve been doing a lot of research on sleep and sleep deprivation lately - and I’m more convinced than ever that we need more sleep! Below is an interesting article on “Natural Sleep Aids”:

Sleep aids are required by millions of people on a regular basis. The most common way to deal with the less serious sleep problems is to go to the doctors, who invariable offers sleeping pills, which do work for many people. However there are many more sleep aids that will help you to tackle sleep problems in a more organic and holistic way.

Sleep is a necessary and vital biological function. It is essential to a person’s physical and emotional well being. Studies show that without enough sleep, a person’s ability to perform declines dramatically. It is estimated that 50 percent of the adult population is sleep deprived and these people would benefit from some good information about the many sleep aids that are available.

In general it is important to get between 6 to 8 hours of sleep per day. Although sleep requirements vary from person to person. Since we now know how important sleep is for us individually and for the productivity of society as a whole, it is important that we start counting those sheep. Incidentally, counting sheep is a very effective sleep aid that as been around for hundreds of years and it does work.

The stress that may be attributed to longer work hours and increased commute times, unfortunately contributes to insomnia and other sleep disorders.

Also some medical problems that can lead to insomnia are:
1) Over-activity of the thyroid gland, 2) Depression and/or anxiety, 3) Allergies, 4) Any illness, injury or surgery that causes pain, 5) Sexual problems, 6) Urinary, gastrointestinal or neurological disorders and 7) Side effects of certain medications.

There are other things that can lead to insomnia, such as, emotional stress, stimulants, lack of physical exercise, or the lack of a sex partner. If you believe you are suffering insomnia from one or more of these reasons, then you should consult your doctor as soon as possible.
Even if you are not an insomniac, but just having some difficulty sleeping, there are many sleep aids that can help you get a good night sleep.

Some of the sleep aids and helpful guides are listed below:

* Avoid caffeine of all forms after lunchtime. * Avoid long naps during the day. * Avoid more than two alcohol servings at dinnertime. * Take a warm bath before bed. * Read a book or do a tedious activity (avoid T.V.). * Make your bedroom comfortable. * Develop a bedtime routine * Count sheep (again repetition). * Herbal sleep aids, prescribed by a professional herbalist * Melatonin * Acupuncture * Massage * Relaxation techniques, meditation, yoga * Reiki healing

Do not take sleep medications unless prescribed by your physician.

Try these time-tested sleep aids. If they do not work, then this may be an indication that you may have a more serious, medical condition. Therefore, consult your physician when possible.

Dreams of Juggling

Writing by Joi on Saturday, 13 of May , 2006 at 4:00 pm

I recently got an e-mail from a young man who was having strange dreams. Each night he dreamed of carnivals - and he was always the main attraction. His routine never changed - he was always juggling something or another. One night it was knives, but most nights it was balls.

I told him that these sorts of dreams generally meant that the dreamer had more going on in their life than they think they can handle. I suggested that, in these cases, the dreamer often needed to take a long hard look at their life and see if they’ve bitten off more than they’re able to chew….without choking!

He e-mailed back (He loved the chewing vs. choking analogy and said that he’d been choking himself for some time now and was quite “fed up!”) He told me that it all made perfect sense now. Apparently he’s enrolled in college - taking a full course load. He’s actually taking three summer classes, even. I didn’t think anyone took three summer classes! His thinking has always been to get through college as fast as he can, so he can get to work (as a Physical Therapist) as soon as possible. In addition to going to school full time, he works two jobs. He said he doesn’t want any loans to pay back. He lives with his parents, so he THANKFULLY doesn’t have any extra expenses. I’m afraid that if he did, he’d take on a third job!!!

We went back and forth for about a month with e-mails. I kept telling him, “You are SO young - you should be enjoying college, not trying to fly right through it!” He admitted that he wished he had more time for going to ball games and for soaking up the college atmosphere. He said he sometimes felt like he was missing out on everything. I told him that was because he was!!!

I got an e-mail one morning that said he’d quit one of his jobs, reconnected with an old girlfriend (I was pulling for her!) and had attended a dance that week. I smiled all day!!!

He said his juggling dreams had stopped, he felt his age again, and he no longer wanted to just get through college….he wanted to enjoy it. His girlfriend has even enrolled now and, from what I hear, all is beautiful in their world!

By the way, thank you to all of the readers who e-mail me! I love e-mail and you are the most colorful, fun, entertaining people in the world.

Sometimes days go by and I realize I haven’t updated the Dream Blog - but that’s only because I get so involved with e-mailing my dream buddies! I’ll try harder to make sure I update the blog more often….I’ll just do it along with the emailing.
